Project xCloud May Be Coming to TV Sticks | MakeUseOf

by Malika Karoum / Tuesday, 27 October 2020 / Published in Malika Karoum Global News

Microsoft has done a good job bringing its cloud streaming service, Project xCloud, to as many devices as possible. However, the company is now striving to bring Xbox streaming to those who don’t have a console or a phone via a special TV stick.

What Do We Know About the Xbox TV Stick?

While nothing is set in stone just yet, this news came from the mouth of the current head of Xbox, Phil Spencer. In an interview with Stratechery, Phil revealed how he wants to bring Project xCloud to televisions without an Xbox.

Phil Spencer had this to say on the matter:

I think you’re going to see lower priced hardware as part of our ecosystem when you think about streaming sticks and other things that somebody might want to just go plug into their TV and go play via xCloud. You could imagine us even having something that we just included in the Game Pass subscription that gave you an ability to stream xCloud games to your television and buying the controller.

The TV stick will be “free,” as in you won’t have to go to a store and buy one. We say “free,” because if this stick becomes a reality, there are plans to add additional tiers to the Xbox Game Pass. As such, you’d likely need to subscribe to a higher Xbox Game Pass tier than Ultimate to receive the stick.

Speaking of tiers, there were also hints at an “Xbox Game Pass Platinum.” Platinum pass holders have guaranteed access to new Xbox hardware when it’s released.

Microsoft’s Plan for the Next Generation of Gaming

With the next generation of gaming consoles rapidly approaching, Microsoft has shown its hand on what its battle plan is for the coming years. It’s clear that Microsoft wants its Xbox franchise to represent one thing: value.

Not only is the Xbox Game Pass one of the best game subscription services, but it can be played on a myriad of devices. For one monthly payment, you can download PC and Xbox games at no additional charge.

Microsoft has recently added even more value to the Xbox Game Pass with Project xCloud. You can now play Xbox games on Android phones, adding another platform to Microsoft’s range.

Microsoft had issues getting xCloud on iOS, however, due to Apple’s strict rules with game streaming services. However, even there, Microsoft chooses not to give up, instead offering iOS gamers a browser-based version of xCloud in the future.

Now it seems that, despite Microsoft targeting pretty much every device it can with xCloud, the company isn’t content yet. Now it wants people without an Xbox or a phone to enjoy games on the cloud by plugging a stick into their TV.

What’s Next for Project xCloud?

When you thought that Microsoft had finally covered every base with Project xCloud, the company comes out with even more news on its expansion. At the rate Microsoft is going, who knows what devices will see xCloud next?

Right now, Project xCloud can only be played on mobile devices. However, if you’re not a fan of mobile gaming, never fear; Microsoft has plans to bring the service onto PC and Xbox, too.
